DID YOU KNOW?
Every year, people spend billions, yes, billions, of dollars on gift wrapping paper and materials. Gift giving is a common practice for many people. A lot of crafters even make wrapping paper from scratch, which makes it one of the most unique printable paper crafts. Seeing a beautifully wrapped gift is impressive, so perhaps it's not that surprising. However, have you ever wondered where this idea of wrapping presents came from? The idea of wrapping paper has been around for a long time. And, like many inventions (Play-Doh and Velcro are two interesting examples), the idea of pretty paper covering presents was completely accidental. In the early 1900s, the owners of a stationery store ran out of tissue paper and decided to put the fancy, thicker patterned paper used for lining envelopes for sale. The paper was a huge hit so the next year they sold the same paper under the label "gift wrapping" and it sold out super quickly. From then on, decorative printed paper was created specifically for wrapping gifts. Gift giving hasn't been the same since. How strange it would be to be simply handed an unwrapped gift. There are many ways to wrap a gift these days, from recycled newspaper to gorgeous patterned wrapping paper. Actually, the Japanese frequently use furoshiki, which is a decorative, reusable cloth used to wrap gifts. How very resourceful!
